Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Your Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition that causes the endometrial tissue to grow outside of the uterus. This condition can cause painful and heavy periods. It is important for women to get this condition treated as soon as possible. There are a number of complications that can result if endometriosis is not treated.

Fertility Issues

Women who have endometriosis are more likely to have problems conceiving. In fact, it is estimated that 30 percent of women with endometriosis will have problems conceiving. This condition can damage the fallopian tubes and ovaries.

In order for pregnancy to occur, the fertilized egg must travel from the fallopian tube to the uterus. After that, it will implant inside of the uterus. Endometriosis may prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall. Women who have mild to moderate endometriosis usually will probably not have any problems conceiving. However, this condition has a tendency to get worse over time.

There are medications that can be used to treat endometriosis. However, the medications will not improve your fertility. Women may need to have surgery to remove the endometrial tissue.

Bowel and Bladder Problems

Endometriosis can affect the bowels and bladder. If this occurs, then you may be required to have major surgery. You may have to get part of your bladder removed. If you get surgery on your bladder, then you will have to use a catheter for a few days.

You may also have to get a portion of your bowel removed. In some cases, women have to temporarily use a colostomy while they are healing. A colostomy is a bag that is used to collect waste products. A hole is made in the stomach before the colostomy bag is placed.

Ovarian Cancer

Women who have endometriosis are more likely to develop ovarian cancer. However, the risk of ovarian cancer is still relatively low. Women with this condition are also more likely to develop a rare form of cancer called endometriosis-associated adenocarcinoma.

Heart Disease

Unfortunately, having endometriosis might give you a higher risk of someday getting heart disease. If you have been diagnosed with endo, it is more important than ever that you pay really close attention to your health and work closely with your doctor to prevent it.

Furthermore, a hysterectomy is often recommended to treat severe endometriosis.

Women who have a hysterectomy are more likely to develop heart disease.
