If you want to get started with do it yourself DIY self-sufficiency, being able to grow all the vegetables you need is an essential skill. However, some vegetables are much easier to grow than others and for the best results, it’s good to start off with something simple. That’s why in this article I’m going to help you do exactly that by listing three simple vegetables that you can grow at home.

1) Carrots

Carrots are a versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed steamed or boiled with a wide variety of others foods. They’re an extremely good source of vitamin A which boosts your vision and keeps your eyes healthy.

To grow carrots indoors, you will need:

  • A large pot with drainage holes at the bottom and a dish to catch the water
  • Carrot seeds
  • High quality potting soil
  • Garden sand

Once you have these things, just follow the instructions below to start growing your own carrots indoors:

  1. Place the pot in a sunny eastern or western facing window.
  2. Fill the pot with 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 garden send and mix them well.
  3. Make shallow 1/4 inch trenches in the soil which are 2 inches apart from each other.
  4. Place the carrot seeds in the trenches and then gently cover them with the soil.
  5. Use a plant mister to generously mist the top of the soil.
  6. Continue misting the soil every couple of days until the seeds start to sprout.
  7. Once the seeds start to sprout, check the soil every couple of days and if it is dry to touch, water it with a watering can.
  8. Once the carrots are fully grown, harvest them, wash them and enjoy them.

  • A large plastic pot with drainage holes at the bottom and a dish to catch the water
  • Chili pepper seeds
  • High quality potting soil

Once you have these things, simply follow the steps below to start growing your own chilies indoors:

  1. Place the pot in a sunny southern or western facing window.
  2. Fill the pot with potting soil and leave about an inch of space at the top.
  3. Sow the chili pepper seeds a couple of inches apart.
  4. Cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil.
  5. Moisten the soil regularly with a plant mister (once every day or every couple of days).
  6. Once the seeds start to sprout, check the soil every couple of days and if it is dry to touch, water it with a watering can.
  7. Once the chilies are fully grown, pick them and start adding them to your meals.

3) Tomatoes

Tomatoes make a great addition to both sauces and salads. In terms of nutrition, they’re packed full of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K which keep your cells and vital organs healthy, boost your immune system and much more.

To grow tomatoes indoors, you will need:

  • A 5 gallon bucket
  • Tomato seeds
  • High quality potting soil

Once you have these things, simply follow the steps below and start growing your own tomatoes indoors:

  1. Place the bucket in a sunny eastern or southern facing window.
  2. Fill the bucket with potting soil and leave about an inch of space at the top.
  3. Sow the tomato seeds a couple of inches apart.
  4. Cover the tomato seeds with 1/4 inch of soil.
  5. Moisten the soil regularly with a plant mister (once every day or every couple of days).
  6. Once the tomato seeds start to sprout, check the soil every couple of days and if it is dry to touch, water it with a watering can.
  7. Once the tomatoes are fully grown, pick them and start enjoying them.

The three vegetables listed in this article are a great starting point on the road to self-sufficiency. Once you can grow all three, you can then experiment with growing other vegetables and before you know it, you’ll be able to grow all the vegetables you personally need.
