Being famous is no protection against Lyme disease. Here are 14 high-profile sufferers.
Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne is one of the latest in a growing list of celebrities who have been diagnosed with Lyme disease and struggled with various symptoms. Her experience was one all too common to those with Lyme-severe symptoms, yet being told by doctors that they were imagining things. She has been outspoken in her discussion of the illness and what a toll it took on her life until she sought her own treatment and got her life back.
Another recent sufferer, actress turned fashion designer Ashley Olsen has withdrawn more and more from the public eye as a result of worsening symptoms such as chronic pain and exhaustion. They think she was first infected back in 2012.
These 2 celebrities making headlines with their candid revelations has triggered others to come forward to share their own stories to pass on the message of health and healing. They include:
Tony and Emmy Award winner Jane Alexander believes she has had Lyme disease twice, though it is possible that it was never fully cured after first being diagnosed. She was involved with a 2008 documentary called Under Our Skin, designed to educate the public about Lyme.
Former Indiana Jones actress has worked with a range of doctors and contends that Lyme is becoming an epidemic similar to that of AIDS. She promotes to use of alternative treatments and has created various public service announcements about Lyme.
His illness was disclosed in 2007 after a year of secrecy about the illness. His case raised the issue of better insurance coverage for the condition.
This tennis great has become convinced that her injuries and cognitive issues were caused by undiagnosed Lyme. As she points out in her Twitter posts about her condition, it is tough disease to manage because you have to be proactive even when you are totally exhausted.
Pop star Neneh Cherry became ill with Lyme all the way back in 1989 at a time when so little was known about Lyme that some people referred to it as “Neneh Cherry Disease.” Her full schedule these day would seem to indicate that she is either cured, or able to manage her symptoms well.
Richard Gere contracted Lyme in 2000 and seems to have been successfully treated with antibiotics. As he said of the experience: “This is one scary disease. I felt as though every ounce of strength had gone from my body…”
This half of the famous pop duo Hall and Oates has been quoted as saying that Lyme “can make you wanna die if you’re not dead.” Hall was diagnosed with Lyme in 2005 and had to cancel concerts as a result. He has become an outspoken critic of the medical establishment’s approach and discusses it often on his guest appearances on Howard Stern’s radio show.
Punk singer Kathleen Hanna was diagnosed with late stage Lyme in 2005 and has become an outspoken activist about the illness. Her fight with Lyme was partly documented in the film The Punk Singer, and she recently did the #LymeDiseaseChallenge to raise money and awareness for Lyme research.
The actor and musician was misdiagnosed for years, with his cognitive symptoms labeled as Alzheimer’s disease for many years.
Actress Parker Posey was diagnosed with Lyme in 2009 and since then has been an advocate for alternative treatments because antibiotics didn’t cure her.
The author of “The Joy Luck Club” has written extensively about her experiences with Lyme on her official site and in articles for various publications.
“The Color Purple” has written about how she diagnosed herself and has rebuilt her life slowly.
